A Detector Log Video Amplifier (DLVA) is a RF / Microwave device that is used to amplify or measure signals with a wide dynamic range and wide bandwidth.
These signals cannot be handled with Linear Amplifiers without adding distortion to the output signal. In these cases, Logarithmic Amplifiers are used. DLVAs use Detector Diodes to detect the envelopes of RF signals and compress them in a subsequent Video Amplifier stage to approximate a logarithmic transfer function.
DLVAs have a limited dynamic range. Successive Detection Log Video Amplifiers (SDLVAs) are Log Amplifiers that can operate over a wider dynamic range than DLVAs. Extended Range Detector Log Video Amplifiers (ERDLVAs) have an even wider operating frequency.
DLVAs are offered as either AC-coupled or DC-coupled models, allowing the ability to discriminate signals relative to the actual Noise Floor, or to differentiate narrow band signals in the vicinity of CW signals that could potentially distort the measurement of a signal of interest.
