Linear Power Supplies
The voltage produced by an unregulated power supply will vary depending on the load and on variations in the AC supply voltage. For critical electronics applications a linear regulator may be used to set the voltage to a precise value, stabilized against fluctuations in input voltage and load. The regulator also greatly reduces the ripple and noise in the output direct current. Linear regulators often provide current limiting, protecting the power supply and attached circuit from overcurrent.
The benefit of a Linear Power Supply is its extremely low ripple and noise specifications, which is typically required in High Frequency Electronics and for test systems. The trade-off is however that these Power Supplies offer very poor efficiencies (typically 50 %).
As a result the modern-day use of Switch-Mode Power Supplies has found favour due to the typical efficiency exceeding 80 %, despite having very poor Ripple & Noise performance. Additional line filtering can mostly take care of this.
